Local Organizations and Initiatives

Cornell Cooperative Extension offers research-based support to gardeners with online horticulture leaflets, gardening schools and master gardener classes.

ReWild Long Island works with communities on Long Island to protect and improve the biodiversity, resilience and health of regional ecosystems by adopting sustainable landscaping practices centered around native plants.

Suffolk Alliance for Pollinators is a coalition of local groups making Suffolk County a greener pollinator corridor through good gardening practices.

International/National Organizations and Initiatives

Community Pollinator Pathway projects are organized by volunteers from town conservation organizations (listed on each town’s page) working together to establish pollinator-friendly habitat and food sources for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinating insects and wildlife along a series of continuous corridors.

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats.

Seed Saving Resources

Organic Seed Alliance manual A Seed Saving Guide for Gardeners and Farmers. This manual provides the basics of how to grow seed, from choosing appropriate varieties for seed saving to harvesting, processing, and storing seeds.

Richmond Grows  list of seed saving resources. The Richmond Grows Seed Lending Library is open to everyone and provides, in addition to seeds, education about growing and saving seeds and organic gardening.

Seed Exchange is a nonprofit that conserves and promotes America’s culturally diverse but endangered garden and food crop heritage for future generations by collecting, growing, and sharing heirloom seeds and plants.

Suffolk County LibGuide Seed Saving and Seed Libraries highlights the importance of seed saving and provides tips and links to resources.

Vegetable Seed Saving Handbook provides specific seeds saving instructions for common vegetables.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center an interactive site where you can search for New York native plants.

Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder allows users to look up, view a photo and read about the over 7,500 plants by scientific name, common name and/or selected plant characteristics.

NATIVE PLANT LIST for New York, Pennsylvania, and Northern New Jersey a “starter” list of native plants for New York, Pennsylvania, and northern New Jersey. It is intended for residential or commercial landscapers who want to create attractive and varied native landscape.
